Dreadlocks have certainly come a long way

from being rebellious to maybe the most popular hairstyle around.  The last 10 years has also brought a large number of people who are starting dreadlocks with short hair.  How does a style that could get you ridiculed, killed and maimed in one era suddenly become the hottest trend in the next?

To explain this you also have to explain why it is

fashionable to wear socks with slippers, smoke weed and only talk via text!  Today, many people in their 30s to 50s have chosen to get dreadlocks and I am seeing more people starting dreadlocks with short hair.  A number of people with super curly (4C) hair still get extensions but there seems to be more acceptance of a big chop.

.

Starting dreadlocks with short (4C) hair presents a number of challenges:

  • The hair has to be at least 3-4 inches.
  • It will be in the form of twists for at least 3 months.
  • Twists are known to get messy in a week, especially at the nape.
  • You may look like an alien form of your former self when you see yourself for the first time.

The last statement is no joke.  You actually look strange to family, friends and colleagues, who may be used to you with more hair and more volume.  This will be the most adventurous part of your dreadlocks journey and it is not for the weak.  A lot of potential dreddies have quit at this stage so be very sure you are prepared for starting dreadlocks with short hair.
