On July 12, the city of Ottawa went to stage 2 of its reopening and many

hairstylists breathed a sigh of relief only to realize we are open by appointment only.  This tight scheduling is totally in line with keeping clients as well as workers safe, but in an industry built on getting the most “bang for your buck”, it also means lost revenue. No longer can you slot an easy job between longer ones to maximize customer satisfaction and boost your revenue..

Any seasoned hairstylist will have mastered the art of making appointments.  There is nothing

more frustrating to us than having what was to be a 20 minute appointment turn into an hour long one.  For example, I once had a lady call in to request a blow dry. just a simple blow dry she said as she had already washed her hair.  What she neglected to tell me was that she had washed her hair without combing out the knots and 30 minutes later, my good deed turned into a nightmare that had me 1 hour behind schedule .  I learnt that some things you have to see to believe.

Knowing how to schedule your appointments is now

crucial to maximizing your income because you cannot have more than one client in at any time.  This is not a challenge for me as I was always doing that.  What I have found to be the most challenging was learning to breathe normally wearing the masks.   Cleaning time has now turned into a major sport so this also gets added to the time slot of the appointment.

When this phase gets done and we are back to normal,  I will still be saying we are open by appointment only but boy will I be happy to shelve these masks.
